Personal Finance

  • When you deposit a check, availability of some or all the funds may be delayed due to a hold. This is because after a deposit is made, the money isn’t immediately credited to the bank; the check must go through a central clearing house (an organization that acts as a middleman to facilitate transactions between parties) operated by the Federal Reserve Bank. Once BMO receives the credit, we can make the funds available to you.

    Why banks place holds

Check holds are designed to protect you and BMO. These allow the bank time to ensure that the bank account on which the check is drawn from has enough money in it to pay the check. A hold can also be placed to prevent other issues such as fraud.

A hold protects you from using the deposited amount if the check is rejected and returned from the payer’s bank. Although these may be placed on check deposits, Federal Reserve Board Regulation CC limits how long a bank can hold them before making funds available.

Common reasons to place holds on a check deposit:

    • A new account
    • Large deposits
    • Repeated overdrafts
    • Reasonable cause to doubt collectability (meaning the bank is unsure the check will clear)
    • Redeposited checks
    • Emergency conditions

    Avoiding check deposit holds

You may be able to avoid a deposit hold by using options like wires, Automated Clearing House (ACH), Zelle®, cash or online transfers, which generally clear faster and are less likely to have holds. Some exceptions may apply like check deposits through BMO Digital Banking: you may receive a FundsNow offer, which, for a fee, guarantees immediate access to the full deposit upon acceptance. Federal Reserve wire transfers and pre-authorized electronic credits are also generally available the same business day.

Funds availability and deposit holds at BMO

Hold periods will depend on how your deposit is made:

    • Mobile deposit: When you make a mobile deposit, the Mobile Check Deposit approval email states when your funds will be available. To learn more about the availability of your funds through this method, you can refer to the BMO Digital Banking Agreement.
    • ATM deposit: Check out the BMO Handbook for information. footnote star
    • Branch deposit: A Notice of Hold will be provided at the time of deposit. If we decide to place a hold after you leave the branch, a Notice of Hold will be sent to the mailing address on file. footnote star
    • Mail Deposit: A Notice of Hold will be sent to the mailing address on file.

Cutoff times and why they matter

Cutoff times are deadlines set by financial institutions (like BMO) to process transactions, which include deposits. This is key to understanding when your funds will be available. If you make a deposit before the cutoff time, it’s processed that day. Deposits made after the cutoff or on non-business days are processed the next business day.

Cutoff times matter because when a check deposit has a hold, funds will be made available to customers based upon how and when the deposit was processed.

    Requesting details on a hold

For details on your hold, you may refer to the Notice of Hold or you can reach out to us at 1-888-340-2265.

  • We’re here to help

Whether caused by a pandemic, economic slowdown, or other unique financial circumstance, you may occasionally have temporary difficulties making your loan payments. When this happens, you have options.

A variety of home retention options may be available if you apply and are approved:

    • A loan modification for a more affordable monthly mortgage payment.
    • Alternative repayment or forbearance plans to help bring delinquent payments current within months rather than requiring a lump-sum payment.

Other options may be available to allow you to leave your home and avoid foreclosure, including a short sale (the homeowner sells a property for less than the amount owed) or deed in lieu of foreclosure (the homeowner gives the lender title to the property in exchange for a release from the mortgage payment obligation). Your eligibility for any foreclosure avoidance option is based on a variety of factors such as income, expenses, and loan type. A complete loss mitigation application is required for most relief. If you submit a complete application for loss mitigation assistance, federal law generally allows us up to 30 days to decision your application, and longer in some cases.

    How to get help

To be prepared to discuss your options with us and apply for assistance, we suggest you have the following documents ready:

    1. Copy of verifiable income documents (e.g., pay stubs) for the most recent 30 days for all applicants.
    2. Copy of the two most recent bank statements (all pages) for all applicants.
    3. If self-employed, signed and dated copy of most current year Profit and Loss Statement and most recent Federal Tax Return documents for all applicants.
