External Transfers

  • An External Transfer is a transfer of money between your BMO Personal or Business Checking, Savings or Money Market footnote 1  account and an eligible External Account at another U.S. financial institution. External Transfers will also allow you to transfer funds from an External Account to an eligible BMO mortgage, line of credit or other Personal or Business Loan account that you have with us.

  • An External deposit Account at another U.S. financial institution is eligible as long you are: (i) the sole owner of the External Account, (ii) a joint owner of the External Account, or (iii) authorized by all of the owners of the External Account to transfer funds to or from the External Account.

  • You can make an External Transfer if (i) you are 18 years of age or older, (ii) you have a street address on file (P.O. Boxes are not eligible), (iii) you have a BMO Personal or Business checking, savings or money market Account or an eligible BMO mortgage, line of credit or other Personal or Business loan Account and (iv) you have an eligible External Account at another U.S. financial institution.

  • To add an External Account: In BMO Digital Banking, first, select Pay & Transfer on your home screen and then select Transfers to or from another bank; then select Add a New Account and enter the following information: account type, nickname (optional), routing number, and account number.

  • You must be the sole owner or a joint owner of the External Account or otherwise be authorized by all of the owners of the account to operate the External Account in order to add it to your profile and transfer funds to the External Account. But don’t worry, you can use Zelle® to send money to another person that you know and trust.

  • No. You can only transfer money from a U.S. account that you own and uses U.S. Dollars as its currency.

  • No. We do not charge a fee to make an External Transfer. However, fees may apply if an External Transfer overdraws your Account. You should also check with the financial institution where you have your External Account to see what fees and charges it may charge you.

  • If sufficient funds are not available from your deposit Account to complete an External Transfer, funds may be drawn from any eligible overdraft service. Fees and interest may apply. For additional information regarding overdraft services, please see your Deposit Account Agreement or any Overdraft Protection Line of Credit Agreement that you have with us. The Overdraft Funding agreements can be found in the BMO Handbook at www.bmo.com/en-us/legal.

  • External Transfers usually take 2-3 business days.

  • You can make an External Transfer on a one-time or recurring basis after you add an External Account:

    • You can make a one-time transfer on the next available date or schedule it for a future date.
    • You can use the recurring transfer feature to transfer the same amount at regularly scheduled intervals, such as once a month.
  • Your external transfer limits are based on the type of accounts you have, your account history and usage. You can view the transaction limits by selecting View Limits on the External Transfer screen and selecting the From and To accounts. These limits and qualification of those limits are subject to change from time to time without prior notice to you.

  • The External Account validation process may take up to 3 business days. If we require validation of the External Account it will be validated using trial deposits, and it can take up to 3 business days for the trial deposits to display in your External Account. Once these deposits are in your External Account, please log in to BMO Digital Banking to validate these deposits to your account in External Transfers.

    • Log in to the BMO Digital Banking App or BMO Digital Banking.

    • Under Accounts, select Chosen Account.

    • Select the last four digits to obtain the full account number.

  • An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is used to identify an individual bank account in international transfers for many countries around the world. Please note that the U.S. does not use IBANs, therefore your BMO Bank N.A. account does not have an IBAN.

  • There are two primary ways to send a wire transfer from your BMO Bank N.A. account.

    1. You can make an appointment with a BMO financial center representative to send a wire transfer from your local financial center.
    2. For customers who are outside of a BMO financial center footprint or have frequent wire needs, you can complete a Wire Transfer Services Agreement and follow the instructions to submit the agreement for processing. Please be advised that processing timeframes for the agreement vary from three to five business days and not all accounts may be eligible for this service.

    Domestic Wire Transfers:

    • You will need the recipient's name, address, ABA routing number and account number.

    • Cutoff time is 4:30 p.m. CT / 2:30 p.m. PT.

    International Wire Transfers:

    • You will need the recipient's name, address, BIC/SWIFT code and account number.

    • Cutoff time is 4:00 p.m. CT / 2:00 p.m. PT.

    • Please note that certain countries require additional specific information and/or account identifiers to route the wire. Please ensure all information is obtained from your recipient.

    • You will have the option to send the wire in USD or a foreign currency that is available at BMO. You should consider making that decision based on instructions received by the recipient as well as other factors that impact the total cost and amount available to the recipient, including exchange rates and fees.

If you are a BMO Private Bank client or an account holder at BMO Canada, you may have additional digital options. Schedule an appointment with a banker at your nearest BMO financial center to learn more.

  • Fees and limits may apply depending on your account type and the type of wire. Your account may also have special benefits regarding wire fees. Please refer to the deposit account agreement for more information.

Domestic Wire Transfer Fee:  $30 USD

International Wire Transfer Fee:  $50 USD

Remittance Transfer Fees (international consumer wires only): For Remittance Transfers, we're required by law to inform you of the fees we and/or our intermediary banks will impose to deliver the international wire to your recipient. For some requests, we may not have exact fees, but rather an estimate, which will be disclosed to you. This applies to consumer wires only. Non-personal wires are not required to have exact fees disclosed.

  • Domestic: Typically, a domestic wire is processed and released by BMO Bank N.A. the same day and received by the recipient on the same day. There are, however, several factors that may impact or delay the release and/or delivery.

International: Typically, an international wire is processed and released by BMO Bank N.A. the same day, however the delivery to the recipient may vary and normally will take several business days. For Remittance Transfers, we will advise you of the estimated date of delivery for the payment. There are, however, several factors that may impact or delay the release and/or delivery.

  • For retail and small-business clients, please call us toll-free at 1-877-696-7379 or email us at BMOUS.RetailWires@bmo.com.

Credit Card Payments

  • Yes, you can make payments from any eligible deposit account from another U.S. financial institution.

  • Not yet. You can set up one-time or future dated payments from any eligible internal BMO account or external deposit account from another U.S. financial institution. We will update the FAQs with more information about setting up automatic payments for credit cards when this feature becomes available.

BMO Bill Pay

  • Bill Pay lets you pay bills on a one-time or recurring basis from an eligible Account.

  • Eligible Accounts include BMO personal or money market checking accounts.

  • We do not charge a fee to make a standard Bill Payment. We do charge a fee for Expedited Payments. The fee will be disclosed to you at the time you set up the Expedited Payment. The amount of the fee will vary by whether the Expedited Payment is made by ACH payment or by overnight mail. In addition, fees may apply if a Bill Payment overdraws your Account.

  • To use Bill Pay, you must have:

    1. A US or Canadian street address, an email address and phone number on file with us (P.O. Boxes are not eligible);
    2. A BMO personal or money market checking Account; and
    3. Be enrolled in BMO Digital Banking.

We must also be able to verify your Billing Account and other information with your Biller before you enroll a Billing Account in Bill Pay. Your Account must be in good standing with us in order to use Bill Pay.

  • If you set the "Deliver By" date for more than 15 days in the future, the Scheduled Payment won't appear until the 15th day before the "Deliver By" date. For example, if you set the "Deliver By" date to occur within the next 10 days, it will appear right away. But if you set the "Deliver By" date for 20 days from now, it won't appear for another 5 days. Once your Scheduled Payment is processed it will appear in the posted transactions. You can go to Bill Pay to get full details on a specific Bill Payment, modify or cancel a Scheduled Payment and access your Bill Payment history.

  • "Deliver By" is the date you select for us to deliver your Bill Payment. After you select a "Deliver By" date, this date becomes your Scheduled Payment Date. We will display the earliest possible "Deliver By" date for your Biller when you are scheduling the Bill Payment. You must select a "Deliver By" date that is no later than the actual due date reflected on your Biller's billing statement. However, if the actual due date falls on a non-business day, you must select a "Deliver By" date that is at least one (1) business day before the actual due date.

  • If the "Deliver By" date that appears in Bill Pay when you schedule a Bill Payment is not soon enough, you may be able to make an Expedited Payment. Depending on the Biller, Expedited Payments can be sent electronically or by check. Overnight check delivery is not available to Billers with a post office box address or with an address in Alaska, Hawaii or any United States territory.

To make an Expedited Payment, select Rush delivery available next to the Estimated delivery calendar icon on the REVIEW AND PAY screen. Your Expedited Payment options will then appear along with the fee for making the Expedited Payment.

  • Each payment will display its status throughout the life cycle of the Bill Payment. The available statuses are:

    • Scheduled: A Bill Payment is waiting to be processed according to the date you indicated it should be paid.

    • Processing: The Bill Payment is in the process of being sent to the Biller for payment.

    • Processed: The Bill Payment you scheduled has been sent to the Biller. For electronic and corporate check payments, the money will stay in your checking or money market Account until the Deliver By date. For payments that are paid with a draft check, the money will stay in your Account until the check is cashed by the Biller.

    • Cancelled: The Bill Payment was cancelled by you.

    • Failed: The Bill Payment could not be sent for processing.

    • Minimum: There is no minimum amount of a Bill Payment.

    • Maximum: There is no maximum amount of a Bill Payment that applies to an individual user.

However, our vendor imposes daily ACH limits by Biller. If these limits are exceeded, we may need to schedule your Bill Payment as a check instead of an electronic payment.

  • The funds for electronic payments will be debited from your Bill Payment Account on the Deliver By Date.

A traditional paper check or "draft check" is when we, or our Vendor, generate an individual paper check for the amount of your Bill Payment to your Biller. Traditional payment checks will be debited from your Bill Payment Account on the date that the check is cashed by the Biller.

A "corporate check" is a bulk check generated by us, or our Vendor, to a Biller that covers your Bill Payment along with bill payments arranged by other customers. Corporate checks will be debited from your Bill Payment Account on the Scheduled Payment Date, regardless of when the check is cashed by the Biller.

  • If you have properly scheduled the payment in Bill Pay to be delivered by the payment due date for your bill, you have sufficient available funds to cover the payment on the Scheduled Payment Date and your Bill Payment isn't delayed for reasons listed in the BMO Digital Banking Agreement, your Bill Payment will arrive as scheduled or we will cover any late fees you incur up to $50 under our Bill Pay Service Guarantee. footnote 2

  • Yes, it's easy to set up recurring payments so you don't have to worry about remembering to make a Bill Payment. If the Scheduled Payment Date for a recurring payment falls on a weekend or a holiday, your Bill Payment will be processed on the previous Business Day.

  • Go to Pay & Transfer, from the Pay Bills page locate and select the Biller. On the Biller Details screen, select Add Reminders to select your desired options and then select Set Reminders. Note that there are some alerts that are generated automatically to notify you of specific activity in your Bill Payment Account. For security purposes, you are unable to turn them off. You can also set up Alert Notifications for other Digital Banking services through Digital Banking Preferences.

  • When you close an Account linked to your Bill Pay, all Scheduled Payments from that Account will be cancelled. If the Account being closed is your only Account eligible for Bill Pay, then all eBills listed in your Bill Pay profile will also be deactivated.

If you have multiple Accounts with us, all eligible Accounts will be linked to your Bill Pay profile. If you are closing one of your Accounts linked to Bill Pay, you should verify and change any Scheduled Payments that are scheduled to be paid out of that Account to one that you are keeping open to prevent them from being cancelled. eBills will only be cancelled if the remaining Accounts linked to your Bill Pay profile are closed.

Before closing an Account associated with Bill Pay, please change any Scheduled Payments from that Account to an Account that will remain open. Otherwise, all Scheduled Payments from the closed Account will be cancelled.

  • Yes, you can make changes to Biller information from the Pay bills tab within Digital Banking by selecting the Biller and selecting Edit Biller. Depending on the Biller, you can edit the nickname, account number, address information, phone number and assigned category.

  • Yes, you can organize your Biller list into groups within Pay bills. Within BMO Digital Banking, simply go to Pay Bills, select the Groups toggle next to My billers and select the Manage link. Enter a group name that would describe your billers and select the Add button. Create as many groups as needed. Once the groups are created you can assign each biller to a group. You may also select to hide a group containing payees you wish to keep and not delete. Simply click the Display group toggle.

  • Bill Discovery automates the process of adding payees with a few simple clicks. With the user's consent, a search of the extensive Biller Network and the credit bureau is initiated. The search results are displayed, and the user selects which billers they want to add to their payee list. (Please note: the credit bureau search does not affect credit scores. No credit score is returned.)

  • BMO personal customers who are enrolled into Bill Pay. Bill Discovery will also display if billers were previously added but no payments have been made for the previous 30 days.

  • You can use Bill Discovery to search either the Biller Network, the credit bureau or both. If you opt to have the search run on the credit bureau, you consent to a soft pull of your credit report to present the credit accounts. This one-time credit pull will not affect your credit score, no credit score is returned during the search and only information used to present the payee suggestions is stored.

  • You can use Bill Discovery to search either the Biller Network, the credit bureau or both. Biller Network consent is valid until deactivated. Credit report consent is valid for one year.

  • There is no fee to use this premium feature.

  • Yes, when you log in to BMO Bill Pay you will see a notification on the landing page advising you that new billers have been identified. In addition, you will receive an email alert informing you that a new potential biller has been identified.

  • Yes, to opt out of Bill Discovery navigate to Search Results and select "Turn off automatic search" on the bottom of the screen.

  • If you see a biller you don't recognize, it may have been identified from your credit report. Bill Discovery can't change or remove credit report information. If you believe the biller is incorrect or unfamiliar, contact Equifax directly to review or dispute it. You can also choose not to add the biller to your Bill Pay list.

Alerts and Notifications

  • Your safety and security is our priority. If you've shared your user ID and password with third-party apps like Quicken, QuickBooks, accounting or tax software, loan applications or retirement savings platforms to access information from your online banking, it may be triggering a lock on your account.

You can manually sync your data by entering a one-time passcode. However, automatic data pulling by these apps or software can cause your profile to be locked. If you can't disable this feature, we recommend updating your user ID and password for added protection.

  • Security Alerts Notifications are automated alerts that are related to the security of your Accounts. Examples of Security Alerts include notice of: (i) a password change for Digital Banking, (ii) Paperless Statement availability and (iii) Internal Transfer failures. You cannot opt out of receiving Security Alerts. Personalized Notifications are optional alerts that you can set up to help manage account activity. Examples of Personalized Notifications that you can elect to receive include notice of: (i) successful Internal Transfers, (ii) loan Account payments due and (iii) Account balances below thresholds you set.

    1. Go to the Preferences menu in BMO Digital Banking (online or in the Mobile App) and select Notifications and alerts, then select Security alerts or Personalized notifications, depending on what you want to do.

    2. Select the delivery method.

    3. Establish the type of alerts you want to receive.

  • Customers can select to receive Security Alerts and Personalized Notifications via email or SMS/text. You can also elect to receive these on your mobile device as push notifications. A push notification is a way for our Mobile App to notify you without you actually opening the Mobile App.

  • Short codes, or short phone numbers, are 5- or 6-digit telephone numbers used to send text messages (SMS).

  • BMO Digital Banking alerts can be delivered by text message (SMS) through major U.S. wireless providers and sent from the short code 56695 or 37309. You can request BMO Digital Banking Alerts at no additional cost from BMO. However, standard message and data rates may apply. Message frequency depends on your account settings. You can opt out of BMO Digital Banking Alerts at any time by modifying your notification and alert settings or by responding STOP to the text alert.

  • You can transfer money from an eligible BMO checking, money market checking, savings or line of credit.

You can transfer money to an eligible BMO checking, money market checking or savings Account or make a transfer to an eligible BMO mortgage, line of credit, credit card or other loan Account with us.

Please refer to the Money Market Deposit Accounts Withdrawal Limitations section of the Deposit Account Agreement found at www.bmo.com/en-us/legal for specific information. In addition, fees may apply if an Internal Transfer overdraws your Account.

For additional information regarding overdraft services, please see your Deposit Account Agreement or any Overdraft Protection line of credit agreement that you have with us. The Deposit Account Agreement and Overdraft Funding Agreements can be found at www.bmo.com/en-us/legal.

  • Yes. When you make a payment for select types of BMO loans, you will be presented with an option to make an Additional Principal Payment. We will then apply the amount you designate to the principal balance of your loan, as long as all amounts then due and owing on your account have been paid.

  • Any amount you pay through an Internal Transfer in excess of the amount due and owing will be applied consistent with the terms of your loan agreement. Once your payment has been made, you can contact us at 1-888-340-2265 to find out how your specific payment was applied and, if you wish, you can instruct us to apply your excess payment differently.

  • Your periodic loan statement will show your payment and how it was applied, including principal, interest, escrow and other details.

Savings Goals

  • A BMO Savings Goal is a free feature in BMO Digital Banking that helps you save for the things that matter most. Set a personalized savings goal, track your progress and create recurring transfers to help you reach your target faster. Available for eligible BMO savings accounts.

  • A Savings Goal is available through BMO Digital Banking for customers that have a personal savings or business savings account.

  • If you have a personal savings or a business savings account, you can log in to BMO Digital Banking and go to the Account details page, then select START A SAVINGS GOAL to create your personalized Savings Goal.

  • Once you create a Savings Goal in the Account details page of the savings account, you will see a VIEW SAVINGS GOAL link underneath the progress bar. This link takes you to your Savings Goal details page.

  • Once you have created a Savings Goal, a progress bar will appear on the Account Summary page in BMO Digital Banking.

  • On the Savings Goal details page, the ADD FUNDS button allows you to transfer funds from other eligible BMO accounts to your savings account.

Remember, any deposit to your savings account, recurring or one-time, will add to the balance of your account and Savings Goal. This means that you can deposit a check, transfer funds from a BMO account or an account at another financial institution, and deposit money via a BMO ATM or at a BMO financial center. However you choose to add funds will count toward the progress of your goal.

  • Once you create your goal, and if you have an eligible BMO account, you will be prompted to set up a recurring transfer to help you achieve your goal. You may set that up right away or in the future. If you choose to set up a recurring transfer later, you can go to the Savings Goal details page and select the SET UP RECURRING TRANSFER link to create a new recurring transfer to your savings account. If you need to edit your recurring transfer you can use the MANAGE RECURRING TRANSFERS link to edit an existing recurring transfer to your savings account.

For additional information on recurring transfers, please refer to the Internal Transfers section on this FAQ page.

  • On the Savings Goal details page, the EDIT SAVINGS GOAL link allows you to completely change your goal or make small adjustments. If you want to, you can also delete your goal. Do this any time you'd like. It's your goal. Deleting a Savings Goal has no impact to your savings account or its balance.

  • Yes. Only one goal can be created per savings account. If you wish to set up multiple savings goals, you can open a new Savings Builder account online or by calling 1-888-340-2265. You can find more information on opening a Savings Builder account here. To open a new Business Savings Builder account, please visit a BMO financial center or call 1-888-340-2265.

  • When your goal progress bar reaches 100%, you have achieved your goal. Congratulations! Once you have achieved your goal, the next step is up to you. You can use the funds for the goal you created, or you can edit your goal to increase the goal amount, change the name to a new goal and/or extend the duration of your goal, or you can delete the goal. No matter what you do, it's your goal!

  • If you reach your goal prior to your goal end date, that transfer will continue to move money to your savings account until your goal end date. You can cancel the remaining transfers by going into the Savings Goal details page and selecting MANAGE RECURRING TRANSFERS to edit or delete.

If we receive the deposit on or before 8:00 p.m. Central Time (CT) on a business day, we will consider that day the day of deposit. If we receive the deposit after 8:00 p.m. CT, or on a weekend or other non-business day, we will consider the next business day as the day of deposit. For approved checks deposited into checking and Money Market Checking accounts, the first $500 of each deposit will be available for overnight processing on the day of deposit or will be available for cash withdrawal one (1) business day after the day of deposit. Any amount in excess of $500 will be available two (2) business days after the day of deposit. For approved checks deposited into savings and money market savings accounts, all funds will be available two (2) business days after the day of deposit. Fund availability may be delayed for accounts opened less than 90 days or if we suspect that a deposit may be fraudulent.

  • Please keep the original check for fifteen (15) Business Days after you have deposited it and then void the check. Once fifteen (15) Business Days have passed and you have verified that the money has been credited to your account, you should shred the check before discarding it. Do not attempt to deposit the check again.

  • It could be because the image wasn't clear enough. For the best results, lay your check on a flat, dark surface with adequate lighting. Hold the camera steady and make sure all four corners of the check are captured. Also, make sure you have signed the back of the check and that the signature is on your right when taking the picture of the back of the check.

  • If you have any questions about Mobile Deposit, please call 1-888-340-2265 to speak with a banker.

  • FundsNow gives you immediate access to the funds from an eligible check if you're depositing on a business day before 8 p.m. Central Time (CT). You'll be given the option to choose FundsNow when you're using Mobile Deposit if your check and account are eligible.

Checks deposited after 8 p.m. CT or on a non-business day will be immediately available for cash withdrawal or debit card purchases. However, those funds will not be available to complete certain transactions such as covering overdrafts and paying checks until the next business day.

Explore the frequently asked questions (FAQs) in Spanish.

  • Yes, the fee for FundsNow is 2% of the deposit amount for checks $100 and over, or $1 for checks of $99.99 or less.

  • Checks deposited after 8 p.m. CT or on a non-business day will be immediately available for cash withdrawal or debit card purchases. However, those funds will not be available to complete certain transactions such as covering overdrafts and paying checks until the next business day.

  • Not all checks are eligible to receive the FundsNow service. If you don't see the FundsNow option when depositing a check using the BMO Digital Banking app, that means that either your check is ineligible or the account you're depositing into is ineligible. Checks of less than $20 are never eligible for FundsNow.

  • You can permanently turn off FundsNow offers in BMO Digital Banking via Preferences (Preferences > Account preferences > FundsNow). Or, if you want to temporarily turn off FundsNow offers for 30 days, you can select the "Don't show me this again" checkbox the next time you see a FundsNow offer while making a Mobile Deposit.

If you turn off FundsNow offers in Preferences or select the "Don't show me this again" checkbox, funds from approved checks will be deposited as usual for no charge.

  • FundsNow guarantees the full amount of your deposit, so you don't need to worry about the check not clearing or money being returned after it has been deposited.

Debit Card Controls

  • Enrolling in Card Monitor in BMO Digital Banking is easy and available online and via mobile. Using the Mobile App, go to the More menu at the bottom right corner of your screen, scroll down and select Manage debit/ATM cards. From this menu, you will be able to access and set up both your Debit Card Controls and Debit Card Alerts.

Using your desktop, go to your Account and select Manage debit/ATM cards. From this menu, you will be able to access and set up both your Debit Card Controls and Debit Card Alerts.

Note: All eligible debit and ATM cards linked to your deposit Account(s) will appear and you may have to select which card you would like to update.

  • Debit Card Controls enable you to determine how, when and where your debit/ATM cards are used. The following Card Controls are available: Locations, Merchant types, Transaction types and Spending limits.

  • A Card Alert for a debit or ATM card is a notification you elect to receive via push notification, email or SMS/text when your debit or ATM card is used. You can customize your Card Alerts based on Locations, Merchant types, Transaction types and Spending limits.

  • Newly established Debit Card Controls and Card Alerts take effect as soon as you have set and saved the selection. Updates to, or cancellations of, existing Debit Card Controls or Card Alerts also take effect as soon as you have saved the change.

  • Debit Card Controls and Card Alerts can only be set up for ATM and debit cards that are linked to checking or savings Account(s) that you own or to which you have otherwise been authorized to access by all owners of the Account.

  • If your card number remains the same (for example, upon expiry or replacing a damaged card), the expiration date will automatically be updated and your previously set Debit Card Controls and Card Alerts will remain.

If a new card number is issued (for example, for a new card or a lost/stolen card), then you must establish new Card Alerts and Debit Card Controls for the new card number in BMO Digital Banking. You can do this by following the steps described above.

  • Yes. You may have multiple Debit Card Controls in place at the same time.

  • Spend limits can only be set per transaction, per day, per month or per transaction type, and not at the individual region or merchant type level.

  • Yes. Recurring payments are managed through the Auto Pay transaction type in Debit Card Controls. To have them included in any Debit Card Controls you set, the Auto Pay control must be turned on. If Auto Pay is not enabled, recurring payment transactions will not be included under your configured limits.

  • Debit Card Controls and Debit Card Alerts will continue to work. However, you will not be able to sign up for new push notifications during the Mobile App outage. You will be able to set new Debit Card Controls or Card Alerts for debit/ATM cards, or remove existing ones, through the desktop experience. All Card Alerts for debit/ATM cards are sent to your mobile device as push notifications through the Mobile App. The Mobile App must be installed and your device must be operational for you to receive these Card Alerts.

Total Look

Getting Started

  • Total Look is a free online money management tool that helps you save time and simplify your financial life. It gives you a clear picture of your accounts including checking and savings, online investments, credit cards, mortgages, loans and more, even if they're not with us, all in one secure footnote 4  location, with one password.

  • There are many ways Total Look can help you simplify your life. You can view your account balances and history from both BMO and non-BMO accounts in one convenient location, personalize a budget and set goals and easily track your progress to stay on track.

  • To access Total Look, log in to BMO Digital Banking, select Total Look, then select Get Started. That's it. You are now ready to start adding your accounts and using Total Look.

Managing your Total Look Account

  • At this time, these accounts are not automatically added in Total Look. You can manually add them by selecting Link Account, then select or search for the BMO investment account you want to add, enter the account information and select Link Account.

  • It's easy to add accounts in Total Look. Select Total Look, then select Link Account and either enter the account you wish to add or select from a list of popular accounts. Enter your online login information for the account being added and select Link Account. Then select Continue and you're all set. The account will instantly appear within Total Look. When adding non-BMO accounts, the data that displays in Total Look is provided by third parties and is read only.

  • It's easy to edit accounts in Total Look. Select Total Look and go to Settings - Account Settings. Choose your site name to get to Edit Credentials. Enter credentials for this site and select UPDATE and you're all set.

  • To set a budget in Total Look, select Spending, then under Budget select the three dots and choose Create Budget. You can track your income and spending summary, along with your budget details.

Using Total Look

  • Every time you access Total Look, your account data will attempt to automatically refresh. Total Look will pull the last 90 days of transaction activity. To prevent Total Look from missing any transactions for accounts, we recommend accessing the Total Look tab at least once every 90 days. If Total Look is not able to receive an update from your external financial provider, your account will not refresh and you will receive an error. You can try and refresh your account again at any time.

  • From Accounts, select the three dots and choose Account Settings. Scroll down and you may Close/Delete an account. To remove a non-BMO site, go to Settings - Account Settings, select the desired site and then select Delete Site. Your BMO accounts that were pre-populated cannot be removed.

  • The bank's privacy and security policies apply to Total Look. The bank does not store any of your non-BMO account information and the information displayed in Total Look is read only.

If you have questions or disputes regarding your BMO deposit or loan accounts, please go to bmo.com or contact us at 1-888-340-2265.

For any non-BMO account data disputes, you need to contact the account provider directly.

Open Banking FAQs

  • Beginning April 2022, you will be asked to update your credentials for any financial service provider that has already converted to Open Banking. This new verification method is faster, more secure footnote 4 , and less likely to fail due to linking errors.

  • The new connection method Open Standard for Authentication (OAuth), more commonly referred to as Open Banking in the financial industry, is the latest verification technology used by financial service providers that allows clients to securely provide consent to have their account information shared with other financial service provider applications. You may already be using OAuth in other applications. For example, it is what is used when you sign into your Instagram using your Facebook credentials.

  • Total Look is moving to Open Banking to provide our clients with the most secure way to link your accounts to get your full financial picture in one place. Many financial service providers are moving to this new connection method of Open Banking.

  • The steps below should be completed for every account that is prompting for an update:

    1. Sign in to BMO Digital Banking from a computer or tablet browser.

    2. Select Total Look on the left side of the screen under Quick Actions.

    3. Choose Accounts and then select any colored alert icons next to each account.

    4. A pop-up will appear asking you to update your consent. Choose Update Credentials.

    5. Fill in your credentials and provide consent to link your account information.

After granting consent, you will be returned to your Total Look account listing.

  • If you choose not to update your account connection, your profile will contain outdated data from the impacted providers. The account(s) in question will stop syncing data from your financial service provider.

  • Zelle® is a convenient way for BMO customers to send and receive money with friends, family and others you trust through our mobile app footnote 5  or online banking. All you need is your recipient's email address or U.S. mobile phone number, and money will be available to use in minutes if they're already enrolled with Zelle®. Your account information and activity stays private. Zelle® is available in over 2,200 bank and credit union apps, so you can send money to friends and family even if they don't bank at BMO. footnote 6

  • First, you must have a BMO personal or business account (checking or money market) and be enrolled in BMO Digital Banking. You also need the following on file: email address, U.S. mobile phone number and address. When you enroll with Zelle® through BMO Digital Banking, your email address and U.S. mobile phone number associated with your profile will be included as part of your enrollment.

  • Neither BMO nor Zelle® offer purchase protection for payments made with Zelle®. For example, if you do not receive the item you paid for, or the item is not as described or as you expected. Only send money to people and small businesses you trust and always ensure you've used the correct email address or U.S. mobile phone number when sending money.

  • You can send money to almost anyone with a bank account based in the U.S. We strongly recommend that you only send money to people you know and trust. If the recipient is not enrolled with Zelle® through BMO, or another financial institution, they will receive a notification from Zelle® asking them to enroll to receive the funds. The recipient will not be able to receive funds using Zelle® unless they enroll.

  • In order to use Zelle®, the sender and recipient's bank accounts must both be based in the U.S.

  • Yes. Users don't have to be BMO customers, but must enroll with Zelle® and be able to send money from or receive money into a bank account in the U.S.

  • BMO does not charge a fee to use Zelle®. However, fees may apply if a Zelle® transaction overdraws your BMO Account.

  • Please call BMO at 1-888-340-2265. Qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement.

  • There are no limits on receiving money in your BMO Account.

The minimum amount that you can send or request is $5. We also set limits on the number of times you can send and the amount of money you can send. Your limits are based on the type of account(s) you have. You can find your daily and 30-day limits when you access the Send money with Zelle® feature in BMO Digital Banking. Click Send, choose a recipient and select the information icon for your limit details.

  • It's easy. Zelle® is already available within BMO Digital Banking.

Use our mobile app footnote 5  or sign in to BMO Digital Banking online and follow a few simple steps to enroll in Zelle® today.

    To send money using Zelle®:

    1. Select Send and then Add New Contact to add the recipient's email address or U.S. mobile phone number, or choose a contact you have already added.

    2. Enter the amount you'd like to send.

    3. Click Review. You then have the option to add a note about the reason why you are sending money.

    4. Review your transaction and then select Send.

  • Zelle® QR code provides peace of mind knowing you can send and receive money to the right person without typing an email address or U.S. mobile phone number.

To locate your Zelle® QR code, log into the BMO Digital Banking app footnote 5 , select Send Money with Zelle®. Next, go to your Zelle® settings and your QR code will be displayed. From here you can view your QR code and use the print or share icons to text, email or print your Zelle® QR code. To receive money, share your Zelle® QR code.

To send money, log into the BMO Digital Banking app footnote 5 , select Send money with Zelle®, select the Quick Send QR code icon. Once you allow access to your camera, simply point your camera at the recipient's Zelle® QR code, enter the amount, hit Send and the money is on the way. When sending money to someone new, it's always important to confirm the recipient is correct by reviewing the displayed name before sending money.

  • If your recipient has already enrolled with Zelle® and the money is sent directly to your recipient's account, you cannot cancel the payment. That's why it is important to only send money to recipients you know and trust. You can only cancel a payment if the recipient hasn't yet enrolled with Zelle® and your payment is still pending. In that case, you can go to your Activity page after you select Send money with Zelle®, choose the payment you want to cancel and select Cancel This Payment.

  • Money sent with Zelle® is typically available to an enrolled recipient within minutes. footnote 3  That's another reason why it is important to only send money to recipients you know and trust. Ask your recipient to enroll with Zelle® before you send them money. This will help them get your payment more quickly.

If you send money to someone who isn't enrolled with Zelle®, they will receive a payment notification prompting them to enroll with Zelle®. If BMO or Zelle® suspects a transaction is fraudulent, we may delay the transaction to protect you.

If your Zelle® transaction has not been completed within 3 business days, we recommend that you verify that they have enrolled with Zelle® and that you entered the correct email address or U.S. mobile number. If you're waiting to receive money, we recommend that you confirm that the sender entered the correct email address or U.S. mobile number for you.

Still having trouble? Please call BMO at 1-888-340-2265.

  • If you receive money from someone you don't know, please contact us at 1-888-340-2265.

  • You can find a full list of participating banks and credit unions live with Zelle® at www.zelle.com/get-started.

If you have never met the person, or are not sure you will get what you paid for, for example items bought from an online auction or marketplace, we recommend you do not use Zelle® to make a payment. Neither BMO nor Zelle® offer purchase protection for payments made with Zelle®. For example, if you do not receive the item you paid for, or the item is not as described or as you expected.

  • Yes. Minors are not permitted to use certain services such as External Transfers. However, it is important to remember that account owners are jointly liable for any transaction related to your joint account. For example, if your minor joint account holder sends a Zelle® payment, you will be equally responsible for that transaction.

To cancel a payment, you'll need to ensure that the recipient hasn't enrolled with Zelle®. Visit your Activity page, select the payment and choose Cancel this payment. If this option isn't available, contact customer support at 1-888-340-2265.
