Simple steps to opening a BMO bank account before your move

To help make opening an account in Canada as easy as possible, follow the seven steps below and fill out the print-ready forms and letters before you move:

1. Select a BMO branch. Select where you would like to open an account. Note the name of the branch, the mailing address (with postal code) and phone number. BMO Branch and ATM Locator:
2. Arrange to see your current banker and prepare these documents in advance Your banker will help you open a BMO bank account in Canada. Complete and have the following documents with you when you see your banker:

a) Letter of Direction — Banker — Certificate of Identity Request

This is a formal request to your current banker asking for their assistance in opening an account in Canada. Complete the information required, sign and date this letter.

IMPORTANT: This letter also includes a list of acceptable identification documents.

b) Certificate of Identity — Banker — Newcomers to Canada Account Open Request

Complete this form so that your banker can confirm your identification documents. Bring two acceptable identification documents as listed in the Letter of Direction — Banker (Step 3a) above.

3. Arrange to see your lawyer or solicitor and prepare these documents in advance Your lawyer/solicitor will also help you open a BMO bank account in Canada by confirming your identification. Complete and have the following documents with you when you see your lawyer/solicitor:

a) Letter of Direction — Lawyer/Solicitor — Certificate of Identity Request
This is a formal request for assistance in opening a bank account in Canada. Complete the information required, sign and date this letter.

IMPORTANT: This letter also includes a list of acceptable identification documents.

b) Certificate of Identity — Lawyer/Solicitor — Newcomers to Canada Account Open Request

Your lawyer/solicitor will use this form to confirm your identity. Bring two acceptable identification documents as outlined in the Letter of Direction —Lawyer/Solicitor (Step 4a) above.

4. Complete the form Request to Open New Personal Primary Chequing Account at BMO Bank of Montreal This is your formal request to BMO to open an account with us. Request to Open New Personal Primary Chequing Account at BMO Bank of Montreal:
5. Gather and mail all required forms to the BMO branch you selected in Step 2. Remember to include the following completed, signed and dated forms otherwise BMO will be unable to open an account for you:
  • Certificate of Identity — Banker — Newcomers to Canada Account Request (Step 3b)
  • Certified photocopied identification documents from banker
  • Certificate of Identity — Lawyer — Newcomers to Canada Account Open Request (Step 4b)
  • Certified photocopied identification documents from lawyer
  • Request to Open New Primary Chequing Account at BMO Bank of Montreal (Step 5)
6. Receive your new BMO account information The BMO branch you selected will mail your new account documentation, along with your new account number and all BMO Bank of Montreal Agreements. You will need to bring these documents with you to the branch you selected once you arrive.
7. Make one international wire transfer to your new account (optional) You will be allowed to make one (1) international wire transfer into your new BMO account.

These funds will be held for 12 months. If you do not arrive in Canada to activate your account within 12 months, these funds will be wired back to the financial institution that sent them to BMO on your behalf.
