What is a business certificate of deposit?
A business certificate of deposit – also known as a CD – is a type of business savings account that pays a fixed interest rate on money held for a specific amount of time. In exchange for committing to keep your funds untouched during this period, you earn a reliable yield. CDs come in a variety of terms, ranging from a few months to several years. CDs offered by banks are federally insured, offering a safe option to help you reach your business savings goals.

Business Certificate of Deposit FAQs
When you deposit your money at account opening in a traditional CD, you agree to leave it in the account for a set period, which can range from a few months to a number of years. In exchange, you’ll receive a guaranteed return (often) at a higher interest rate. CDs pay compound interest, ensuring your earned interest earns more interest. Typically, they compound daily or monthly.
To open a business savings account, you’ll need to provide some identification and supporting business documentation. Our Business Documentation Checklist includes everything you’ll need to open your new account. You can open a Business Certificate of Deposit by visiting one of our locations.
At BMO, there is no monthly maintenance fee on a Business Certificate of Deposit (CD). There is an early withdrawal penalty if you withdraw money before the CD’s maturity. You can find all the fee information in the CD Product Disclosure and Fees.
The minimum opening deposit will vary by the type and term of the CD. For most term options, the minimum opening deposit is $1,000.
If you close your CD prior to maturity, you will pay an early withdrawal penalty as detailed in the Product Disclosure and Fees.
With all CDs, you cannot change the term of your CD until it matures unless you close the CD and pay the early withdrawal penalty.
You will be mailed a notice before the CD matures and you will have ten calendar days after the maturity date to withdraw funds without paying an early withdrawal penalty. You can keep track of your CD, including interest earned and maturity date, using BMO Digital Banking.
