Select your lead chequing account, then manage, then OnGuard

Make sure your lead account is selected (i.e. the one you use to pay your banking fees), then select manage, then select OnGuard. Note, if OnGuard is greyed out, then you may not be under your lead account or eligible due to your bank plan.

Set up monitoring services

Follow the instructions to set up your OnGuard account and choose which personal information you’d like to monitor.

On Guard frequently asked questions

  • As a BMO customer, you’re eligible for OnGuard if one of the following is your lead bank account (i.e. the account you use to pay your banking fees):

    • Performance Plan

    • Premium Plan

    • Employee Plan

    • Platinum Plan

    • AIR MILES Plan

    In addition, to qualify:

    • You must be a Canadian resident who has reached the age of majority for your province or territory

    • You must have a valid email address on your BMO profile

    • Your lead account must be in good standing

    • You must be registered for Online or Mobile Banking

    Customers with an eligible Bank Plan with the Kids or Teens discounted banking program do not qualify for OnGuard.

    All accountholders of a lead account with an eligible Bank Plan qualify for OnGuard provided they meet the above eligibility requirements. If you switch your lead account to an ineligible Bank Plan, then you will no longer qualify for the OnGuard service.

  • You are being asked these questions to confirm your identity before we can display the details of your Activity Alerts. This process has been put in place to help protect your sensitive data. Only you would know the detailed information pertaining to your credit history, and, by submitting your answers through our secure website, this sensitive information is never shared with anyone else. Unfortunately, we are unable to display your Activity Alerts without verifying your identity online.

  • If you have any problems with your account or monitoring information, you can contact OnGuard at 1-866-327-3078. We’re available Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm ET.

  • You may cancel at any time by contacting us at 1-866-327-3078. Your cancellation will be effective as of the last day of your current subscription cycle or 30 days after notification is received, whichever is earlier.

  • Your personal information will be monitored on many sites across the public, deep and dark web:

    • Public or Surface Web:The part of the World Wide Web that is indexed by search engines like Google or Bing and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Examples include public chat rooms, news articles and blogs. The surface web accounts for a very small portion, less than 10%, of the entire web.
    • Deep Web:The part of the World Wide Web that isn’t found by search engines like Google or Bing, and is not accessible to anyone who has not specifically been granted access. Examples include personal email accounts, social media accounts, banking accounts, private databases and other services that are accessed through password protection. The deep web accounts for the largest segment of the internet.
    • Dark Web:The part of the World Wide Web that is only accessible by means of special software that allows users and website operators to remain anonymous or untraceable. Criminals trade and sell personal and financial information on the dark web that could be used for identity and financial fraud.
  • We monitor activity associated with your BMO deposit accounts and your BMO debit card and credit card accounts on an ongoing basis. The OnGuard identity protection service helps protect your broader identity against fraudulent use that can result in new bank accounts, other utility accounts and online services being opened in your name.

  • Your alert will contain information to help you assess if your monitored information has been used fraudulently, as well as next steps to respond to the alert. If you need any help, contact OnGuard’s identity specialists at 1-866-327-3078 to help you assess the alert and discuss next steps.

  • Yes. Only the information you provide during your OnGuard activation is automatically monitored. If you have other information that you want monitored, like multiple debit or credit cards, you will need to register those individually.

  • No. The way OnGuard monitors your information doesn’t have any impact on your credit score as it’s considered a “soft” credit bureau inquiry.
