Add another chequing account

Stay on top of your spending and feel confident your expenses are covered with the help of one more (or two or three) chequing accounts. There are no extra monthly fees. Plus, you can manage all your accounts easily with online and mobile banking.

The benefits of having multiple accounts

Build a better budget

By setting up separate spending accounts, you’ll be less likely to go over budget because you’ll have a clearer idea of how much you have to spend. Plus, it’s harder to accidentally dip into the grocery budget during a night out when those expenses come from different accounts.

Add a U.S. dollar account

Do you frequently travel to the U.S. or make online purchases in American dollars? A U.S. dollar chequing account is a great place to put your U.S. cash, and you can easily transfer funds between your Canadian and U.S.BMO accounts.

Add another chequing account FAQs

  • You can easily add another chequing account using BMO online banking or mobile banking.
In online banking: Sign in to BMO Online Banking and select the Explore products tab. Then select the Chequing tab and add the chequing account you’d like. From there, you’ll start the process to open a new account.
In mobile app: Open the mobile app and select the More tab. Scroll down to the Add something newsection and select Open a bank account. From there, you’ll start the process to open a new account.
If you don’t want to open an account online, you can also visit a local branch.
  • If you have an account with unlimited free transactions (e.g. Performance or Premium), additional chequing accounts will also get unlimited transactions.
If you have an account with a limited number of free transactions (e.g. the Plus Account has 25 transactions) then all additional accounts share the monthly number of free transactions. For example, say you have the Plus Account and add another chequing account, you can have 15 free transactions from the lead account, and 10 free transactions from the additional account (or any combination adding to 25). If you go over 25 transactions, you pay an extra transaction fee for each additional transaction.
  • Basically, any action you take that moves money out of your account counts as a transaction. Money coming into your account – like payroll direct deposits or cash deposits at an ATM – don’t count as transactions.
Viewing your account history won’t count as a transaction through Online Banking or BMO Mobile Banking. You might be charged for checking your account history at ATMs or through Telephone Banking.
