KONEK FAQs

  • KONEK is a new eCommerce Payment Platform built in Canada by INTERAC® It allows BMO retail customers to securely pay for online purchases using their bank accounts or credit cards, without sharing or storing account information with merchants.

    KONEK is powered by Interac Corp. and is developed in partnership with major Canadian Financial Institutions to create a secure and convenient eCommerce payment system that provides convenience and safety to both customers and merchants.

  • Participating merchants will show a “Pay with KONEK” option at checkout. Selecting this option for the first time will direct users to set up a KONEK profile. The first time you use it, you will be prompted to create a KONEK profile by signing in to BMO Online Banking and authorizing eligible Chequing, Savings (Premium Rate Savings accounts only), and/or Credit Card account(s).

    Customers with only a BMO credit card and no chequing or savings account will not be able to use KONEK.

    Once this setup is complete, all account information will be tokenized, meaning the merchant will never be able to access your account or card details for transactions.

    Quick Tip: Enabling biometric login will further enhance and secure your checkout experience for future purchases.

  • BMO customers may have multiple account types which may be used for KONEK:

    • Chequing Accounts: All BMO chequing accounts are eligible to be used for KONEK
    • Savings Accounts: Only the BMO Premium Rate Savings Account (PRS) is eligible to be used for KONEK
    • Credit Cards: BMO Visa and Mastercard Credit Cards (excluding Prepaid Mastercard, the US Dollar Mastercard and Diners Club cards) are available to be used for KONEK.

    Note: While BMO credit cards are eligible, a BMO chequing or savings account with BMO Online Banking registration is required to sign up for KONEK.

  • The KONEK payment solution keeps your data safe by using your financial institution’s secure authentication and payment consent protocols. While completing a transaction with KONEK, you are no longer required to enter your card information on a merchant’s website. The information is always tokenised to avoid any misuse of account information.

  • How do I know which merchants are accepting KONEK?

    Participating merchants will display “Pay with KONEK” as a payment option on their checkout screen. For a full list of participating merchants, visit FAQs – Konek.

    Are there spending limits with KONEK?

    Yes, as a BMO customer, your KONEK limits are based on the limits applied to your personal Debit or Credit Card, depending on the account you are using to pay with KONEK.

    Can I use KONEK with International eCommerce Merchants?

    No, KONEK can only be used to make payments with participating Canadian eCommerce merchants. All transactions will be completed in Canadian dollars. For a full list of participating merchants, visit FAQs – Konek.

    How can I view which of my accounts and credit cards are linked with KONEK?

    BMO customers can view and manage their KONEK profile through BMO Online or Mobile Banking. Users can access KONEK in their Profile & Settings section where they can add or remove accounts linked with KONEK.

    Reminder: Customers who only have a Credit Card and no other accounts with BMO will not be able to use KONEK.

    How are refunds processed for transactions made via KONEK?

    Any refund will be credited into the same account which was used to make a KONEK transaction.

    Are there any service fees for using KONEK?

    Can I set up a recurring or automatic payment using KONEK?

    Yes, you can select KONEK as your payment method when setting up recurring or automatic payments with supported merchants. Once set up, your preferred payment method will be used to pay for your recurring or automatic payments.

    How do I cancel a recurring or automatic payment using KONEK?

    You don’t need to cancel a recurring or automatic payment with KONEK. Simply cancel the subscription or recurring payment directly with the merchant. Once the cancellation is processed, future payments will automatically stop.
