We understand how difficult it is for many people, especially those in the 2 S L G B T Q plus community, when the name on your credit card doesn’t reflect your true identity. That’s why we introduced True Name. Personalize your first name on a BMO personal or business credit cardfootnote 1 to proudly display the name you most identify with.
Getting your True Name on your BMO credit card is simple and stress-free.
Simply call the number on the back of your credit card and request your replacement card. Credit cards can also be requested by visiting one of our branch locations. Find one near you.

For our customers whose legal names may not reflect their true identity, a credit card showing their legal name can be a source of sensitivity. Research shows one-third of individuals whose ID has a name that doesn’t match their gender presentation experience harassment and denial of service.footnote 2 True Name is a powerful way we can alleviate a source of anxiety for our customers and deliver banking solutions that meet our customers’ needs.
We’re continuing to uphold our same, high standards to validate our customers’ identities and protect account access. True name credit cards continue to offer all security that come standard with our card products.
If a merchant insists on matching the name on your credit card with a government-issued ID, you can ask them to call the number on the back of your card. We’ll verify the legal name on the account that the credit card is associated with.
Yes – if the first name on your credit card doesn’t reflect your preferred name, we’ll replace your card with a True Name card! You should sign the back of your card with the same name shown on the front. Most transactions no longer require signatures, but if you do need to sign for a transaction, use the name on the front of your card.
You may use either the name on your card or your legal name. Keep in mind that some merchants may require your legal name for shipping purposes.
We have a few basic guidelines for names we can print on credit cards. You can use a different name that your family, friends, or co-workers call you day-to-day if you prefer, however, the name you use cannot be fictitious, humorous or profane.
True Name is available for all BMO personal and business credit cards. It’s not currently available for any other products, but we are exploring how we might expand True Name across additional channels and banking products in the future.

Your last name must be the last name that appears on your account. Use only alpha characters (i.e. cannot include numbers, special characters). Apostrophes and hyphens are allowed.
