What is a high interest savings account?
A high interest savings account, (HISA), also known as a high-yield savings account, is a type of savings account that offers higher interest rates than a traditional one. The interest rate on a HISA is calculated daily on your account balance and paid out monthly. It’s a safe, secure and flexible savings option for you to earn money on your savings, no matter what your short or long term financial goals are.

High interest savings accounts are safest with insured and credible banks or credit unions, carrying minimal risk. In Canada, eligible deposits are protected by the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) up to $100,000 for each account holder.
You generally cannot lose money in a high interest savings account if it is held at a CDIC insured institution. Inflation can reduce the potential purchasing power of your savings over time, but your nominal balance remains safe.
High interest savings accounts usually pay interest 12 times per year. Most banks calculate interest daily and credit it monthly; this monthly compounding boosts returns slightly compared to annual compounding, making it the standard for most high-yield savings accounts.

A high interest savings account (HISA) works by offering high interest rates on deposited cash while maintaining easy access to funds. Financial institutions then pay interest daily or monthly based on the account balance. These accounts are often used for short-term savings and are typically insured, making them low-risk financial tools.
