Mychal Ferreira ranks among the top one per cent of BMO Mortgage Specialists. A 15-year veteran of the bank, his territory is the Greater Vancouver area—one of Canada’s most competitive real estate markets. The secret of Mychal’s success in this uniquely entrepreneurial role? Embracing the hustle.

Mychal, what do you enjoy about being a Mortgage Specialist?

Honestly, this role feels like it was built for me. I worked my way through the branch network and held a lot of different roles, which helped me figure out what I really enjoyed. As a mortgage specialist, you’re essentially building your own business — your network, your pipeline, your reputation. I love that there’s a clear link between how much effort you put in and how well you do. It’s fast-paced, challenging and rewarding. I enjoy the hustle, the independence, and the opportunity to grow something meaningful within BMO

What does your day-to-day experience look like?

No two days are the same, and that’s part of what I enjoy. A big focus is bringing in new business, so my days are built around connecting with people and growing relationships. I’m very intentional about how I structure my time, whether that’s meeting referral partners, exploring new channels, or thinking about how to work more efficiently. I like stepping back and asking, “How can I make this better?” or “How can I grow this further?” It’s a role where strategy and relationship‑building come together every day.

Mychal Ferreira, BMO Mortgage Specialist

What should aspiring mortgage specialists understand about the role?

This job is more than just connecting people with financing. It’s about planning, problem-solving, and guiding clients through complex decisions. You’re helping them figure out the best path to take, even when things aren’t straightforward. That advisory role is what makes the work so interesting — and so personally and professionally fulfilling.

Do your relationships extend beyond individual homeowners?

Absolutely. I spend a lot of time building relationships with realtors, builders, insurance advisors and wealth partners — both inside and outside BMO. Those connections are a big part of how we help clients and grow the business. At the end of the day, it’s about building trust and long‑term relationships that benefit everyone involved.

Does BMO support you in developing those relationships?

Yes, very much so. Relationship building is a partnership between mortgage specialists and the broader organization. We have many programs and referral partnerships at the corporate level, which give us a strong foundation to work from. At the same time, if you identify a new opportunity, there are clear ways to bring it forward. These programs continue to grow, and that support makes a big difference when you’re focused on building and scaling your business.

What kind of personal satisfaction do you get from this role?

Helping someone buy or finance a home is a big deal — it’s often the biggest financial decision they’ll ever make. Whether it’s a first-time buyer or someone navigating a tough situation, being able to help is incredibly rewarding. You see the impact of your work right away, and that never gets old.

What skills are essential to succeeding in a role like this?

Resilience and adaptability are huge. The market is always changing — rates move, policies shift, and challenges come up. The key is staying focused on what you can control and being willing to pivot when needed. An entrepreneurial mindset goes a long way. If you’re someone who looks for opportunities instead of obstacles, you’ll do well in this role.

As a Mortgage Specialist, what do you think differentiates BMO?

The culture, hands down. Leadership is accessible, they listen, and they actually act on feedback. That level of openness and trust is rare. You feel supported and empowered to share ideas and make an impact. Combined with the tools and programs BMO offers, it creates an environment where people can really thrive.

What would you say to someone considering a career as a mortgage specialist at BMO?

If you’re motivated and driven, BMO gives you everything you need to succeed. You can carve out your own path, leverage our unique tools, and grow as far as you want to go. The opportunity is there — it really comes down to how much you’re willing to put into it.
