Raptors 905 - We the North

Raptors 905
As the Official Bank of NBA Canada, we're excited to partner with MLSE in welcoming the newest member of the NBA Development League: the Raptors 905. This is the first Canadian team to join 18 American teams in the NBA's official minor league and we're proud to be their Official Bank. With their home opener on November 19, 2015, the 905 area code is considered to be a "hotbed" for Canadian basketball talent. Eight of the 13 current Canadian NBA players are from this area. That's why the team's tagline is "The road to the Six starts here"; the Raptors 905 is all about the journey to the NBA – specifically, the Toronto Raptors who are sometimes referred to as the Six (for Toronto's 416 area code). Fans have the chance to see the next generation of Raptors players and Canadian talent, as well as the coaches, referees and office executives who are pursuing the NBA dream too. It’s an opportunity to experience basketball in a family friendly environment with affordable tickets and accessible venues – like the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

NBA Canada & Jr. NBA
On March 9, 2015, BMO Financial Group and the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced a multiyear partnership that will make BMO the Official Bank of NBA Canada. The agreement is the league's first partnership with a Canadian bank and will also make BMO an official partner of the Jr. NBA program in Canada.

BMO Financial Group has signed on as the Founding Partner of the Jr. NBA in Canada, which will teach fundamental skills and the values of the game. The program launched in the fall of 2015, following NBA Canada's successful pilot Jr. NBA program in 50 Canadian communities in 2014. The program will reach five million youth in the U.S. and Canada over the next two years through a series of basketball clinics, skills challenges and tournaments. To reach its goal, the NBA has developed a Jr. NBA partnership network that includes youth basketball programs of all NBA, WNBA and NBA Development League teams, elementary and middle schools, military bases and longstanding community partners, including the YMCA.

To develop basketball in Canada further, BMO will serve as an associate partner of the NBA Canada Series. The NBA Canada Series is a slate of preseason games played across Canada (four cities in 2015) that celebrates basketball with live NBA action, interactive fan events and community outreach programs.

The partnership will also include BMO activation around NBA All-Star 2016 in Toronto, the first NBA All-Star to be held outside of the United States. On November 19, 2015, BMO launched a cross-country tour to build excitement for the NBA All-Star 2016 in Toronto: the BMO NBA All-Star Kidsfest Tour. The tour is an interactive family-friendly event featuring Jr. NBA clinics, appearances by NBA legends, dance classes led by NBA dancers, and a youth art program that invites the community to design a canvass which will be displayed during NBA All-Star 2016. At Kidsfest, young sports enthusiasts will also have the chance to try their hand at news making through the popular BMO Junior Reporter Contest. With programs for hardcore fans, players, and youth, the BMO NBA All-Star Kidsfest Tour is another way we support grassroots basketball in communities across Canada. BMO employees are getting in the game too by recruiting volunteers for the 15 major events across the country. The tour will feature 50 events: 15 major events, and 35 satellite events, which will reach 6,000 kids in 50 communities. We are proud to partner with YMCA Canada, where the majority of events will take place. We will also be involved in the Bell NBA All-Star Challenge, which invites basketball enthusiasts ages 16 and older to realize their All-Star dreams. Canada's top three-point shooters, skills challenge competitors and dunkers will compete for a national title at NBA All-Star 2016.

To promote our partnership, we recently introduced a new TV ad which is airing now as part of the NBA Canada Series and will also play throughout the Raptors season. The spot was described by The Globe and Mail as taking an "unorthodox approach" and helps answer the question, "What does a bank like BMO know about basketball?"

nba ambassadors

BMO NBA Player Ambassadors
On August 16, 2015 BMO Financial Group announced endorsement deals with four of the biggest names in Canadian hoops: NBA Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins of the Minnesota Timberwolves; Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors; Kelly Olynyk of the Boston Celtics; and Tyler Ennis of the Milwaukee Bucks. The endorsements enhance BMO's sponsorship of basketball as it continues to develop the sport in Canada at the grassroots level. 4 million Canadians play the game with nearly one-in-two (42 per cent) Canadians aged 12-17 years old. We joined forces with four of the biggest stars in Canadian basketball to lead a youth clinic at the Air Canada Centre. This camp was the first step in our exciting new endorsement - a first-of-its-kind sponsorship for BMO – and gave participants a chance to practise their favourite sport with a few of their idols. The 50 young players were selected from basketball clubs across the GTA related to each star as they ran through drills that focused on teamwork and fundamentals.

To celebrate the game of basketball in Canada, BMO is the Official Bank of the BioSteel All Canadian High-School Basketball Game and signed a multi-year deal. The event will be held in April, 2016 feature the top 24 male athletes born in 1996 or later who are either Canadian-born or enrolled in a Canadian institution. The top 24 will come to Toronto to work with Canadian coaches and trainers in a series of events, including: on-and-off court training, community outreach, skills competitions, and the all-star game. Biosteel has existing relationships with Andrew Wiggins & Tyler Ennis – two of BMO’s NBA player ambassadors.
