Carrying legacy forward: Honouring service through the BMO named RCAF Foundation Scholarships
BMO Gives & Sponsorships
There are stories that shape who we are. Stories of ordinary people who stepped forward in extraordinary moments and became part of something far greater than themselves.
At BMO, those stories are part of our own history. Across the country, young men and women once left BMO branches to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), trading desks for cockpits, and certainty for duty. Some flew dangerous missions over Europe. Others strengthened the force at home. Some earned distinction for acts of bravery. And some, tragically, never returned.
Their legacy is woven into both our organization and our nation, and we share a responsibility to ensure it is never forgotten.
Investing in the future, inspired by the past
Through our partnership with the RCAF Foundation, BMO is proud to support the next generation of leaders in aviation, aerospace and STEM. Backed by a four-year, $100,000 commitment, this initiative provides meaningful support to young Canadians pursuing careers that will shape the future of flight, innovation and national resilience.
A new chapter: Honouring six remarkable lives
Beginning in 2026, BMO will take this commitment further by naming six scholarships in honour of former BMO employees who served in the RCAF during the Second World War:
- Nelson Leslie Gordon
- Joseph Frederic Chevalier
- Jack Griffin Lee
- Edward Lapage Robinson
- Kathleen Whigham
- Wilma Margaret Gunnell
These individuals answered a defining call, serving as pilots, navigators and members of the Women’s Division. By naming these scholarships in their honour, we ensure their contributions live on through the achievements of those who follow.
Connecting generations through purpose
For recipients, this is more than financial support. It is a responsibility to carry forward the values these individuals embodied: courage, resilience and service.
For BMO, it is a way to honour our history while reinforcing our enduring commitment to the Canadian Armed Forces – and building stronger communities for all.
The future will be shaped by bold, determined leaders, but it is built on the foundation of those who came before. By investing in the next generation, we ensure these stories endure not only as history, but as inspiration. Because legacy is not something we inherit – it is something we choose to continue.
