Earth Hour: Small actions, shared purpose
Sustainability

Each year, Earth Hour offers a simple but powerful reminder: when people and organizations act together, even small actions can help spark meaningful change.Â
Earth Hour began in 2007, when the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) encouraged individuals, businesses and cities to switch off nonessential lights for one hour as a symbolic show of support for the planet. What started as a single event in Sydney has grown into a global movement, engaging millions of participants across more than 190 countries and territories. Â
Today, Earth Hour continues to create a moment for reflection and shared responsibility. Switching off lights for one hour sends a visible signal of commitment and helps build momentum for longer-term action that encourages individuals, communities and organizations to consider how everyday choices can affect the planet.Â
This year, BMO marked Earth Hour by switching off nonessential lighting across 22 facilities worldwide, saving more than 684 kilowatt hours of electricity in just one hour. Proof that small actions can become meaningful change, especially when organizations and communities act together.Â
