Here’s sampling of fixed-income investments available through BMO Nesbitt Burns.

GICs

Guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) pay a specified rate of interest over the term of the investment, which typically ranges from one to five years. The return of the original investment amount is guaranteed when a GIC matures. In many cases your money will be locked in until maturity, although some GICs offer cashable options and other attractive investment features.

Money market securities

These investments offer competitive returns over short periods, usually one month to one year. They include treasury bills, bankers’ acceptances and commercial paper issued by companies.

Bonds and debentures

Typically available in terms of one to 30 years, bonds and debentures provide regular income and the promise of the return of a specified value at maturity. They can be traded before maturity in over-the-counter markets.

Strip bonds

These are created by separating (stripping) the principal amount of a bond or debenture from its interest payments. Strip bonds are priced at a discount to their maturity value. Investors receive the full value if they hold the strip bond when it matures. Strip bonds can be traded before maturity. They are a popular choice for investors who do not require current income or who are saving for specific future goals.

NHA mortgaged-backed securities

These represent an interest in a pool of Canadian residential first mortgages, insured by the federal government’s Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation under the National Housing Act (NHA). They offer monthly interest and can be bought and sold.
