Chip Technology - Small chip. Big security improvements

How to use your BMO chip debit or credit card

Making a purchase with a chip debit or credit card with your Personal Identification Number (PIN) is easy and secure.

Photo of a chip terminal At a chip terminal, you simply:
  1. Insert your chip debit or credit card into the chip terminal.
  2. Enter your PIN, leave your card inserted in the terminal and follow the prompts.
  3. When your transaction is complete, remove your card from the chip terminal and take your receipt.

With chip technology, you don't have to sign a receipt when you make a purchase.

BMO chip debit and credit cards will continue to have the magnetic stripe on the back of the card. This means you will still be able to use your chip card at merchants who don't have chip terminals.

For payments made at merchants who don't have chip terminals:

  • Pay with your credit card by swiping your card and signing the receipt, if required.
  • Pay with your debit card by swiping your card and using your PIN.

You can also pay for credit card purchases quickly with MasterCard PayPass.

Using your chip debit or credit card at ATMs will not change. You'll still need your PIN to complete your transaction.

Where can you use your BMO chip debit or credit card?

Over the next few years, more chip terminals will begin to appear at merchant locations and ATMs across Canada and the U.S.

For the convenience and security of Canadian BMO customers, all BMO Bank of Montreal ATMs are already chip-enabled.

How can I change my PIN?

If you live in Canada, you can easily change your debit or credit card PIN at any BMO Bank of Montreal ATM to something easier for you to remember, but which could not be easily guessed by others. We recommend you to change your PIN periodically for extra security. BMO Bank of Montreal ATMs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience.

For our customers residing in the U.S. automated PIN change is not currently available. If you lose or forget your PIN please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page on this website for more information.
